Why plugins

Why do learning platforms fail where networks are scarce?

Most learning platforms are designed for a laptop, fibre and an inbox checked every day. In the field, reality is different.

The phone is the computer. Often entry-level, sometimes shared within the family.
Every megabyte is paid for. A heavy page means less data left to learn with.
Email arrives late, in spam, or never. SMS and WhatsApp are read within the minute.
Network and power cut out without warning. Learning must not stop with them.

We did not adapt Moodle to Africa after the fact. We started from these constraints, then wrote the code.

A day in the field

How do the plugins answer the obstacles of one learning day?

Grâce and Mr. Kabeya are fictional characters. Their obstacles are the ones we meet in every project.

  1. 6:40 am

What if the confirmation email never arrives?

Grâce signed up last night. The confirmation email never came: she created that Gmail address just to register and never checks it.

This morning, her phone buzzes. An SMS: a code and a link. Thirty seconds later, she is logged in. The day she forgets her password, the code will arrive the same way, by SMS or WhatsApp.

  2. 7:30 am

How can learners follow a lesson on a limited data plan?

On the bus to the hospital, Grâce opens her pharmacology course. The page appears in a few seconds: text first, large buttons, nothing that flashes.

The session video waits behind a “Load video” button. She will watch it tonight, on the institute's Wi-Fi. Before arriving, she has finished her practice quiz.

  3. 3:00 pm

How can learners read a document when the network drops?

This morning, the trainer cited a care protocol published by the ministry. It used to circulate on WhatsApp as photos of pages, unreadable half the time.

Now it sits in the institute's digital library, properly catalogued and rated by previous cohorts. Grâce downloaded it at noon in the Moodle app. At 3 pm, the network drops. She keeps reading.

  4. 6:20 pm

How can an institution manage its own users on a shared platform?

Mr. Kabeya runs Grâce's institute. The platform is shared by the ministry across dozens of institutions. To enroll a new cohort, he used to write to the national administrator and wait.

Tonight, he creates the accounts, the cohort and the course for the new term himself, in his institute's own space, with no access to the users of other institutions.

9 pm. Grâce has been learning all day. She did not open her mailbox once.

Quality

What quality commitments does every plugin meet?

These requirements are not slogans: each one can be found in the code and in the tests.

Mobile first

Every screen is designed, then tested, on a phone first, including automated tests run at mobile screen size.

Low connectivity

Nothing heavy loads without the user's consent. Non-urgent sends run in the background.

An interface that gets to the point

Short journeys, large buttons, clear messages, for people who are sometimes discovering digital tools.

Privacy (GDPR) built in

Every piece of personal data is declared in Moodle's privacy API for export and erasure, including transfers to an external service such as WhatsApp.

Security built in

One-time codes are never queued. Reset secrets appear neither in web addresses nor in logs.

Moodle quality

Official Moodle coding standards, unit and functional tests, and no change to Moodle core: your upgrades stay simple.

Audience

Who are these plugins for?

For any organization deploying Moodle where networks are scarce and phones are everywhere:

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about IQRATIC's Moodle plugins

How can SMS costs be kept under control?

Notify Channels includes sending caps and a kill switch. Only the messages you authorize are sent: by default, only sign-in credentials and passwords. Non-urgent notifications run in the background.

Do the plugins modify Moodle core?

No. The plugins make no change to Moodle core, so your upgrades stay simple. Iqralight is a standalone theme with no dependency on another theme.

How do the plugins handle personal data?

Every piece of personal data is declared in Moodle's privacy API, so it can be exported and erased, including transfers to an external service such as WhatsApp. One-time codes are never queued, and reset secrets appear neither in web addresses nor in logs.

Can learners read documents without a network?

With IqraLibrary, designed for the Moodle mobile app, a learner downloads a document once and can read it even without a network.

Can I see the plugins before deciding?

Yes. We demonstrate the plugins in real conditions, on a phone and on a degraded connection. Contact us to arrange a demonstration.

Do your learners look like Grâce?

Let's talk about your platform. We show you the plugins in real conditions, on a phone and on a degraded connection.
